Välkommen till min hemsida,
jag heter Michael Salmon och bor i Årsta, en förort söder om Stockholm. För länge sen föddes jag i London i England, men flyttade som barn med mina föräldrar till Melbourne i Australien. Där bodde jag till 1990 då jag fick möjligheten att besöka Stockholm som tillfällig arbetare hos
Ericsson Telecom AB. Ganska snart insåg jag att det var en bra plats att bo och arbeta på och jag flyttade hit i 1991. I Stockholm har jag träffat många trevliga människor, särskilt
Sonja Edenius som jag bor tillsammans med.
Jag har alltid varit tekniskt intresserad och även om jag utbildades inom telekommunikation har jag hållit på med datorer under en stor del av mitt vuxna liv. Min första dator köpte jag i 1970 och den hettade CARDIAC och var gjord av kartong, den användes mest som ett utbildningshjälpmedel men den var också en fullt fungerande dator. Det dröjde ganska länge till jag köpte ett Z80 baserat S-100 system med 64KB minne, två 8-tums disk driver, en 500KB DRAM drive och en V21 (300 bps) modem. Sedan dess har jag haft mer kraftfulla datorer men inte mer roliga.
Mitt engagemang med WWW började i 1994 när min grupp fick uppdrag att skapa ett dokumentationssystem, ju mer vi diskuterade systemegenskaper destro mer övertygad blev jag att det var WWW som kunde fylla kraven. Till slut byggde vi en demo med CERN httpd och mosaic som fungerade mycket bättre än även jag förväntade.
Förutom datorer är jag intresserad av att röra mig utomhus, mest på cykel men också till fots i fjällen. Jag har varit medlem i Svenska Cykelsällskapet och cyklade ofta med dem i Stockholms trakten och i de närliggande lanskapen. Det är endast nyligen som jag har förstått att det är trevligt att gå ett par mil med en tung last på ryggen genom vild terräng. Numera behöver jag det som en motvikt till mitt vardagsliv i cyberrymden.
20 hundratalets början var inte Ericssons höjdpunkt och pengabrist kändes starkt i datorhallarna. I juli av 2003 blev jag frivillig uppsagt och jag har varit arbetslös sedan dess. Jag hade varit rädd att jag skulle bli tokigt om jag var hemma på heltid men det var inte alls så tråkigt som jag trodde.
Borta från jobbet kunde jag jobba med de saker som jag gillade och en av dem blev en 12-tums iBook. Jag blev förälskad på en gång och det är jag fortfarande. Mac OS X är lika läckert som datorn och någonting som måste provas.
Min lung livstil slutade vid 2004s slut, först fick vi reda på att Sonjas mör Gurli hade cancer och sedan flyttade Musy & Rayi hem till oss. De här ljuvliga damerna hjälpte oss överleva Gurlis sjukdom och död och försätta att berika våra liv. De blev lämnad på en bushållplats mitt i vintern, någonting som jag kommer aldrig förstå eller förlåta, tack och lov tog katt värnet hand om dem innan vi kunde träffas.

my name is Michael Salmon and I live in Årsta, a suburb south of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. I was born a long time ago in London, the capital of England, but moved as a child with my parents to Melbourne, the cultural capital of Australia. There I was interned until 1990 when I got the chance to work temporarily in Stockholm with
Ericssons. I quickly realized that I was meant to live and work in Sweden and moved here in 1991. Here in Stockholm I met
Sonja Edenius with whom I share my life.
I have always been interested in technology and, and even though I was trained in telecommunications, I have worked and played with computers for a large part of my adult life. I bought my first computer in 1970, it was called CARDIAC and was made of cardboard, although intended as a training aid it was none the less a fully functional computer, though admittedly slow. It was a few years before I bought my second computer, it was a Z80 based S-100 system with 64KB SRAM, two 8-inch floppy disk drives, a 500KB DRAM drive and a V21 (300 bps) modem. Since then I have had more powerful computers but none that were more fun.
My involvement with the WWW began in 1994 when my group was given the task of creating a new documentation system, the more we discussed the systems characteristics the more I became convinced that we redefining the WWW. In the end we built a demo based on NCSA httpd and mosaic that functioned much better than even I expected. The project was cancelled but it formed the basis of several other, more ambitious, projects.
Apart from computers I am interested in being outside, mostly on my bike but also on foot above the tree line. I have been a member of the Svenska Cykelsällskapet and I cycled with them often in and around Stockholm. It is also in Sweden that I learned how pleasant it is to walk all day with a heavy physical weight on my shoulders. It is a balance for the virtual load I have in cyberspace.
As most people are aware the beginning of the 21st century was not a good time for Ericssons, and most definitely not for the custodians of an ever aging machine park. In July of 2003 Ericsson AB and I parted company when I volunteered to be fired. Since then I have been without employment and surprisingly happy with that condition, apart from the reduction in income and social interaction. I guess that even old workaholics like me can learn a few new tricks.
Far from the madding crowd I could wander the path less trod and there I found a
12" iBook. I was so taken by this miracle of a wondrous device that I nearly stopped using other computers. Mac OS X is as beautiful as the hardware on which it runs and I recommend that any who haven't yet done so try it. I have been forced to change my credo to:
Geek by nature,
Linux by choice,
Mac by conviction.
The quiet of my solitude was shattered by two events in late 2004, firstly Sonja's mother Gurli, was diagnosed as having cancer and secondly Musy & Rayi came to stay. These charming and beautiful ladies helped us to cope with Gurli's illness and death and continue to enrich our lives. They were abandoned in the middle of winter, something I cannot forgive, but fortunately katt värnet took good care of them before we could meet.
